As part of our Black History Month celebrations, the Virginia Partnership for Gaming and Health at VCU proudly honors Dr. Deborah Haskins for her remarkable contributions to the field of problem gambling treatment. Dr. Haskins has dedicated her career to advancing cultural diversity, health equity, and social justice, with a focus on advocacy, prevention, and treatment, while emphasizing the unique challenges faced by marginalized communities in the context of gambling.
From the outset of her work, Dr. Haskins has been a passionate advocate for grassroots wellness initiatives, educating public health leaders and practitioners about the specific realities that communities experience. She highlights that traditional responsible gambling models often fall short for those who have historically faced oppression, arguing for a more tailored approach that recognizes the complexities of their lived experiences.
A significant aspect of Dr. Haskins' work involves equipping faith communities to understand problem gambling and its intersection with substance use disorders and mental health concerns. She and the Maryland Council on Problem Gambling have trained over 300 faith and spiritual leaders, as well as indigenous healers, helping them connect individuals in need with appropriate care and support. Dr. Haskins served as President of the Council until 2021 and continues as President-Emerita.
Dr. Haskins' influence extends beyond local efforts; she actively supports clinicians globally, having worked in places like the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Nova Scotia, and Nigeria. Her commitment to elevating awareness and promoting holistic interventions demonstrates her dedication to improving lives both nationally and internationally.
We are grateful for Dr. Haskins' invaluable contributions and are excited to celebrate her impact in advancing equity and understanding within the field of problem gambling. Thank you, Dr. Haskins, for your leadership and commitment to making a difference.
